Why Pray?

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about prayer over the past week or so. And with that reading, I’ve been convicted by the Holy Spirit because of my prayer life. Yes … I pray. Yes … I believe prayer is effective. Yes … I believer prayer is communication with God.

However, I do not pray enough. I do not pray with intensity. I rarely pray boldly expected God to really care about what I am saying. I feel as if my prayers are more obligatory at times rather than relational.

Have you ever asked why we even pray? What is the purpose of prayer? To get God to act on something important to us? To ask him to protect us? To provide for us? God knows all these things, and he already wants what is best for us. He knows every need before we even come to him. He will protect us as he chooses to protect us. HE KNOWS IT ALL AND CONTROLS IT ALL … SO WHY PRAY????

I have come to believe there is a very simple reason why we pray. It’s because of the relationship! And there are 2 aspects of the relationship I would like to discuss.

ONE …
As we praise our God, we are reminded of how great he is. As we thank our God, we are reminded of how blessed we are. As we present our requests to God, we are reminded that we are always in need of his care. But most importantly … whatever the situation … as we present it to God, we slowly come to the place where we begin to see the situation from God’s perspective. And when this happens, we then are able to trust him to handle it as he sees fit.

TWO …
The other reason we pray is simply to be with God. God is an individual. He created us to have fellowship with him. He WANTS to be with us. Did you catch that? He WANTS to BE with us. The Almighty God who created everything wants time just to be with me. The sad thing is we … more than not … don’t reciprocate that desire. We do not WANT to be with him. We might say we do … but if we aren’t doing it … then we are demonstrating the true desire.

MY GOAL …
My goal is to become the kind of person that WANTS to be with God. My goal is to spend quality time with my God … as well as quantity time with God.

This life is hard. Why live it by yourself. Let God be your strength. Let God be your friend.

Go with God,
Donald B
